Wekiva Springs State Park in Florida
Gathering research photos
I like to take the iphone and the Nikon DSLR when I go on walks, especially in a place as lovely as Wekiva Springs State Park. It was a good morning for gathering some landscape inspiration. It is best to paint on location, but if time is limited, I always try to collect photos for my reference file collection–I often use them as ideas for larger paintings.

Painting and staying warm
I know that I have nothing to really complain about when it comes to cold weather, but seriously, this cold snap in the south is getting old. The little space heater in my Florida home art studio is helping me cope. I just keep thinking about our brutal summer temps and 5K training in the heat last year, and I think I’d rather be sweating than freezing. Yes, I’ll take the heat. I’m no longer a New York winter girl. Waiting for the warm up–come on Florida!
Here are some photos of the things happening in the studio this week! I’ve finished submitting my paintings for a competition (more about that later), and I’ve started some small works (5×5 inch) mixed media studies on canvas paper. It’s so much fun to work in the square format–and working small allows me try new things and experiment for larger pieces.

I don’t use this lens that often, but it was fun playing with the camera settings today. Of course I was melting in this Florida heat, waiting for hummingbirds that did not visit. Maybe next time!

Ocean art relaxation
Art journal time at Ormond Beach… surfside studio
Living in Florida has its perks. I decided to drive out to Ormond Beach and visit my sister while she was camping with her family oceanside at the Coral Sands Resort. The weather was so lovely, and we even got in a bit of sketching and painting too.
As usual, I brought half the art studio, and I only used 1/10th of the materials I hauled in my art tote. You can never have too many options, ya know? 😉
