Free stitching. Slow stitch.

Boho inspired embroidery

I was always a bit intimidated by all the traditional embroidery rules. It is a lovely disciplined art, with a much respected history. But after seeing more of the boho, slow stitch style thread designs around Instagram, I decided to jump in and stitch more freeform and enjoy the journey.

So in between the fine art paintings and the printmaking, I’ve been enjoying the quiet reflection time of needle and thread.

This was yesterday’s stitching…

A day in Winter Park, Florida

Food and Urban Sketching

Winter Park, Florida is an idyllic place for sketching, shopping, and eating. It’s my favorite place to visit. Yesterday, I braved the chilly (for Floridians) temperature and took some photos, ate lunch, and visited a cafe to do some urban sketching.

I also love trains, and there is always one rolling through…

Wekiva Springs State Park in Florida

Gathering research photos

I like to take the iphone and the Nikon DSLR when I go on walks, especially in a place as lovely as Wekiva Springs State Park. It was a good morning for gathering some landscape inspiration. It is best to paint on location, but if time is limited, I always try to collect photos for my reference file collection–I often use them as ideas for larger paintings.

Nikkor zoom 70-300 mm

I don’t use this lens that often, but it was fun playing with the camera settings today. Of course I was melting in this Florida heat, waiting for hummingbirds that did not visit. Maybe next time!

Ocean art relaxation

Art journal time at Ormond Beach… surfside studio

Living in Florida has its perks. I decided to drive out to Ormond Beach and visit my sister while she was camping with her family oceanside at the Coral Sands Resort. The weather was so lovely, and we even got in a bit of sketching and painting too.

As usual, I brought half the art studio, and I only used 1/10th of the materials I hauled in my art tote. You can never have too many options, ya know? 😉
